No comment. Would if I could. But, I will say that if you actually think we will give that juggernaut full rights to SLi, you might want to take a closer look at our CEO. lol.

Jen-Hsun Huang - bio on Wired http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.07/Nvidia.html (he used to work for AMD oO)
Yeah, I did discover that eVGA's step-up program doesn't apply to the good stuff :/
I just hope I have cash when the good good stuff arrives in 2010/11.

The hopeing for cash for "stuff" in 2+ years, to me, seems a bit silly. Hardware has always been pretty far ahead of the software (that is a good thing) .
As for me I have 2 more systems to build, my WHS and my "future" comp. I want a newer comp than what I have, the girl will get my old 1. The WHS will built on old technology with new hard drives. I decided long ago that I will never be on "the bleeding edge" of hardware. I can however, get close to it. The closer you are the more money you loose, as computers seem to have the opposite effect as a fine wine. Ideally, the future comp will be a evga FTW mobo and a nahalm chip. (in my new case currently under construction )
The problem being, the eternal question, "What are you going to use it for?"
Seriously, you are not going to blow $3000.00+ to play a free online game that won't come close to needing that kind of power to play at max. Are we hoping for an even better game, sure, but still that is a massive waste. Sure, it is a fun Idea to be an "enthusiast" but you need a real reason for an upgrade. Our systems are fairly similar and I will be willing to bet that with minor upgrades (if any at all), those systems will be able to play any game that comes out for the next 5 years, maybe not at max.
Every day more people load up Vista at there homes and like it *shock* *gasp*. Which is going to put more pressure on companies to upgrade. I do understand that being an IT proffesional we do need to stay current.
The best answer for the above question, In my opinon, would be "I have a sponsor." OR "I am a proffesional gamer/benchmark tech.". Untill we can say those things we really need to set a limit and be happy .
As far as hardware technology goes, 2-3 years may as well be a million. The software for main stream users will take that long just to catch up. By that time I suspect a 128 bit windows OS as well.
BTW are you stable now?

Yes thanks - stable as a table.
By the way, I did spend £3200 on a PC to play Guild Wars on. Yes, that's £ not $. GW was my primary concern, but I wanted a top notch system to enable me to do whatever I wanted in future. I wanted the ability to run anything I liked at the highest resolutions and settings. I pretty much achieved that, everything now is hobbyist tweaking.
Ye gods, though - $6000+ on gaming; it's not like I'm wealthy, either :/
I think, in my case, it's sort of e-peen, but not quite. I want to have the best (or very high, at least) even if I don't need it. I just love having a high end PC. Been in love with computers ever since high school, where we had some archaic bit of kit that was programmed with punch-hole tape. the dawn of computing ^^

Maybe we should have a pool about how long it would take for your system to burn out?

I had a lol at this. Thanks Kal.
The deal is, with how fast a computer goes from bleeding edge/near bleeding edge to obsolete, why not overclock? You get better performance for a shorter lifespan, by the time a properly oced computer "burns out" It is more than likely obsolete anyways. 70c is a touch to high but that can be resolved as well..

problem is, his CPU idles at a higher temperature than mine at full load (after 14 hours to boot).
that most certainly can't be healthy, especially given how powerful that chip is. it won't be obsolete for a long time... assuming it lasts that long.

in about 2.5 more years it will be old. But the question is will the software be able to keep up. I do agree 100% that 70c is to hot.
Macs have been using a 128 bit os for awhile now. when the windows 128 bit os and chips come out........

you are confusing logic with process threads. 64bit is the current technology for processors as far as logic is concerned.
Snog, you have got to cool down that core2. It is going to be damaged soon at those temperatures. Those delicate Intel fabs cannot handle that type of heat.

Dunno what caused that sudden leap in temperature - I know we're going through a warm period (as far a Britain goes) but 25C ambient temperature shouldn't cause a raise like that.
Drop down to a 7x multi, see what that does :/

Yes, I know - but it's been running stable with those settings for a few weeks. This jump to astronomical temps is very recent - almost as if the fan on the Tuniq Tower 120 had stopped working - which it hasn't.
I've reverted to "automatic" settings and it's settled down to ~54C (idle :/)

54c at idle is still way to hot.
I have my q6600 oced to 3.4 and it idles from 32-38 using an arctic cooler pro 7 in an antec 900 case with hd 4870 in crossfire and those bad boys idle at around 77c
Did you put on the cpu cooler? Maybe you should have a look at it, it might have been dislodged.
Though atm im without my new pc one of the corsair ram sticks packed it in and called it a day.

Sweet mother of god...
Snoggy, your CPU has thermal leaks. That is the only explanation for it. RMA the CPU to Intel, and they will replace it.

My QX is over 18 months old, came in a pre-built system from a now-defunct company.
Maybe I should start saving pennies for Nehalem.
LOTS of pennies :/

Nehalem won't be too pricey, don't worry. Save about 500 pounds, maybe 600 for a really nice Nehalem setup. Then again, you will need DDR3 (which is thankfully dropping in price pretty quickly)
